Why Dental Laser Is Recommended In A Root Canal

Dental professionals have been debating over the safety of doing root canal procedures as there have been arguments regarding the use of hazardous chemicals and metals. There have been controversies about the procedure’s ineffectiveness because there are instances when the infection is not completely removed by the dental chemicals used during the process. Bacteria can still get trapped within the tooth chamber and even in the jawbones which can lead to mutation and eventually the infection of other vital organs as the mutated bacteria enters the bloodstream.

The usual chemicals used in root canal include bleach and formaldehyde, which have sterilizing and disinfecting agents in them. However, these chemicals can be absorbed by the bones and consequently cause bone death due to its toxicity. Another possible problematic material used during the procedure is the gutta percha which is a type of tooth filling that contains latex. Although latex seems to be a harmless material, there are dental patients who are sensitive and allergic to latex. The gutta percha may also contain toxic metals which include cadmium and mercury.

With these possible problems, some dental patients may not really be free from possible health complications after a root canal is done. The problem with trapped bacteria is also highly probable especially if there is insufficient evaluation done. The infection may get worst and may cause heart disease, reproductive problems, kidney disorder, lung problems, and other complications. A bacterial infection in the mouth has also been proven to cause mental health risks due to the proximity of the mouth to the brain cavity.

Fortunately, dental laser has been rapidly used by dentists as it eliminates the use of hazardous chemical compounds. The availability of biocompatible dental solutions has also improved the process of sterilization and disinfection. After the biocompatible solution is used to rinse the tooth chamber of bacteria, the laser light can then be used to eliminate infected and decayed tissues as well as harmful pathogens. The advantage of laser light is that it has the ability to reflect from the surrounding tissues thereby covering a bigger area for sterilization. Definitely, laser has the ability to cover the root interiors thoroughly.

After the infected tissues are completely removed by laser, the remaining healthy tissues can heal faster and greatly reduce the risk for the need of fake teeth. A mineral trioxide aggregate material can then be used to seal the tips of the root and promote natural tooth healing. The calcium-filled tooth chambers can be restored to its natural healthy condition because the biocompatible materials used during the procedure will help the body identify the tooth as healthy and natural; thereby restoring blood and lymphatic circulation around it.
